The ancient Olympics stopped suddenly when Emperor Theodosius banned pagan festivals in Greece. He believed that the Olympics were offensive to the Christian religion, which he practiced. He believed that this was offensive because the Olympics honored Zeus instead of the god of Christianity.
After Theodosius stopped the Olympics in 393 b.c.e, they didn't come back around for about another 2,000 years. 1896 declared the beginning of the modern day Olympics.
