In the end, the Olympics were started as a religious ceremony for Zeus in 776 b.c.e. The only people who could compete in these games were men who were from Greece and spoke Greek. Some of the unusual sports were pankration, stadian, and chariot racing. One of the prizes for winning was an olive branch. Then a naughty Theodosius, emperor of Greece at the time, banned the Olympics due to offensiveness of the Christian religion. They didn't appear again until 1896 modern day. This marked the beginning of the modern day Olympics. These modern games brought many new sports, such as gymnastics, basketball, swimming, and track and field. These are just a few of the 400 sports in the modern games. Now the Olympics are watched by at least half of the world. Some differences from the ancient Olympics and the modern Olympics are the clothing, the sports, and who was allowed to compete and watch. There are not a lot of similarities but one is the name and the fact that men are still competing. This blog has taught me so much about a topic that is very important to me and others in my community. I hope you have enjoyed this blog and see you guys around! For more info, click here! Bye Bye!
